Meredith x Kari

Sam: Oh my GOD! Okay, bunch of names, I pick Meredith and go, "oh crap" because I only thought of a few people in the pile o' names I thought I could think of ideas for and pair her with if no randomness were involved.
However, randomness makes this fun, so mlyeh to me. ;-; Ahem. So I reach and shuffle through the papers once more, and who do I get? Oh! Kari! Of course. Well there isn't much lesbian action here, so Matthew, it probably won't be of much interest to you. Just some hints of fluff and such.
Had to make Meredith a bit out of character for this (she hides that niceness that is lost), and it's pretty much an alternate universe to our RP.
Scooby Doo: FREAKY!! AHUHUHUHURR. 8B
Anyway, enough of my blabbing, on with the story!

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

It was a relatively normal Saturday evening in the busy city, cars driving by noisily in the streets below. It didn't really bother Kari as she busied herself in her apartment, tidying up and checking on dinner before brushing her hands down on the front of her jeans and plopping down on the couch in the living room for some television and relaxation.

She'd been busy today sorting through some old things and making phone calls concerning her recent break up, and she had finally finished cleaning up the mess her roommate had left in her room the other night after staggering home completely drunk early morning.

'Really' Kari thought, clicking her tongue softly, a small smile gracing her lips. Her roommate could be so unorganized sometimes, it was a wonder she'd managed to drag her butt out of bed to go to work again today. Well, she had helped her get up, much to her friend's dismay, but that's what she was there for, right?

Although, she thought it was most likely no matter how much she complained about it she would have gotten herself up anyway, probably late. Meredith didn't skip work if she could help it.

Kari continued smiling as she thought of the orchid haired woman, her day's stress easing away as she leaned back against the sofa. Breaking up with her boyfriend after such a long time was more bearable with friends like her and Sam around, she thought.

A small yawn escaped her then, and she allowed her eyelids to fall closed. A moment's rest wouldn't hurt now she supposed... Meredith would be home soon anyway.

Nodding almost subconsciously, the soft hearted hikari felt herself drifting off slowly, laying down on the couch and falling asleep with only the faint sounds of the television breaking the silence of the apartment.

Nearly two hours passed before Kari found herself awakening again, blinking the sleep out of her eyes and yawning tiredly as she tried to keep comfortable. Just for a moment, she lay still again with her eyes closed, wondering absentmindedly if Meredith would like the lasagna she made.

'...Oh...' she thought.

"CRAP!!!" Kari yelled, sitting up in an instant, nearly getting tangled in the soft pink blanket that had been draped over her.

"Darn it! Stupid blanket!" she exclaimed in frustration, finally managing to toss it down past her feet and was about ready to bolt into the kitchen when another thought struck her.

"I didn't have a blanket when..." she trailed off, just then noticing the lack of smoke and emergency crew. A bemused chuckle brought her out of her stupor and she turned to face none other her roommate, standing in the kitchen doorway picking at a plate of lasagna.

When Kari didn't say anything and proceeded to stare, she merely laughed and shook her head, making her way over and sitting down on the couch beside her.

"No need to freak, Kari, I got everything under control. This is really good, by the way" she informed her, taking a bite of her dinner. "You want some? It's a little bit burnt, but it's alright"

Kari blinked and opened her mouth to answer before finding a fork held in front of her mouth. The lasagna indeed looked a tiny bit singed, but still edible. Kari glanced quizzically at the older woman, who only shrugged and held the fork in place.

"Have some" she offered again, and Kari couldn't refuse, moving forward and biting off the small chunk of pasta. Chewing it slowly, she swallowed and gave her signature Kari smile.

"That is good!" she agreed happily, and Meredith drew the fork back to pick at the rest.

"Yeah. Good thing I got back in time to rescue it!" Meredith remarked with a grin to which Kari returned sheepishly.

"I'm sorry" she apologized, but her friend waved a hand to dismiss it.

"Don't worry about it. Nothing happened, just be careful from now on" she said, and Kari nodded.

They quieted down then for a few moments before Meredith switched the TV on and started flipping channels. Kari in the meantime got up and stretched before heading to the kitchen to get her own plate of food and telling Meredith to finish hers up.

About a half hour later, the two were settled quite comfortably on the couch together with the pink blanket wrapped around their shoulders, watching some cheesy horror movie full of zombies on cable. They weren't very into it though, every once in a while they'd look at the screen and remark on how lame it was before going back to their conversation, where Meredith was trying to get the subject back off of Ryou.

"You know what we should do to get your mind off of things? We need a girl's day out. We can go out tomorrow, if you want" Meredith suggested, giving the younger an inquiring glance.

Kari's face brightened considerably at the idea, "That sounds like fun... Yeah, we could do that for sure tomorrow!" she responded, and Meredith smiled fondly at her sudden enthusiasm.

"We could invite Samaya, too. And my Sammy, definitely!" she exclaimed, and Meredith pursed her lips and tilted her head.

"Hm...I don't know about that... Grage was bitching all day about how 'that freak Kaiba finally decided to get together with Sam tomorrow after ALL THIS TIME'" she mocked her raven haired co-worker, earning a small giggle from Kari.

"So yeah...I don't think she's available tomorrow, unfortunately" Meredith finished, and Kari gave a small pout.

"Oh...Samaya is most likely busy as well. Hm...it's just the two of us going then. It'll still be fun, huh? We'll stop somewhere to eat too." she said, giving her friend a cheerful smile, which Meredith returned softly.

"Yeah, sounds good. I just got paid yesterday too" Meredith said, and continued before Kari could cut her off, "And no, I did not go crazy spending on booze! That was the job of the poor sucker who thought he was going to get some if he did that for me" she finished with a smirk.

Noting the look Kari gave her at that, she added, "Don't worry, even drunk off my ass I can kick a sober man's! How do you think I got home last night?"

"Uh...I don't think I want to know" Kari alleged, and gave a glance at the TV again to see that the movie was already over. Meredith followed her gaze and picked up the remote, pressing the info button to check the time.

"It's after eleven already?" she blinked in surprise and her face fell in disappointment.

"I'm not tired at all..."

Kari shrugged and pulled the blanket tighter around her shoulders, pulling nearly half of it away from Meredith in the process. "Me neither" she murmured softly.

"Hey..." Meredith protested lightheartedly, tugging at the blanket, which didn't come loose from Kari's grasp. The teasing smile on Kari's face told her she was kidding around too.

"Come here then. The blanket isn't big enough" Kari told her, holding out her arm closest to Meredith as invitation, which she took readily.

Throwing the blanket back over Meredith's side again, Kari sighed softly and leaned on her shoulder, drawing the blanket near again with a vague smile still on her lips.

Meredith studied her for a moment, a warm feeling in her chest. "Not tired, huh?"

"Mhm..." Kari nodded drowsily, nuzzling against her friend's side, to which Meredith rolled her eyes at, patting her hair affectionately before wrapping an arm around her and closing her eyes.

"Mere?" Kari asked quietly, and she looked over again. "Yeah?" Meredith replied. She noted the light pink that had crept upon Kari's cheeks, and her heart sped up at the sight. Why was she feeling like this?

"Meredith...thanks for being there for me..." Kari mumbled, and leaned up hesitantly, just enough to press a kiss against her cheek before resting against her once more. It was just a peck, but it had Meredith feeling breathless.

"K...Kari?" she stuttered.

Kari sat snug at her side dozing lightly, and she sighed quietly. The first bits of weariness of the day begin to creep in then, and she decided to leave her questions for tomorrow.

The living room was dark and cozy with the television being the only source of light, and Meredith only had enough willpower to move right then to pick up the remote and turn it off.

"Goodnight, Kari."

END.
